Compliments, Wishes and Apologies.

We, Louys of Monte-Cristo, offer Our most sincere wishes and compliments to the newly wedded Grafein of Zolms-Braunburg and Graf of Zolms-Braunwald. Let their union be happy and blessed with peace and prosperity.

We present to Our Dear Young Cousins Our deepest regrets for the unjustifiable absence of any special Monte-Cristan Representative of high enough Status at their wonderful Ceremony. Our diplomatic (and other) "Agencies" failed miserably to keep Us informed in due time of the situation in the Furstschaft of Zolms: some heads will roll (figuratively speaking, of course: let no blood spoil this union! And, as any Monte-Cristan, We have a visceral hatred of any violence - obviously)!

A group of young Monte-Cristan ladies, carrying this Letter, will immediatly depart from the Presipality to present the Newly-Weds with pine-seed dragees and other typical Monte-Cristan delicacies, and two richely illustrated old books of appropriate nature from the Presipapal Library.

With all Our Paternal affection,
written by Our Own Hand and signed
Louys

Your Percipacity is entirely too kind to your juniors. The young ladies are enchanting, exceptionally well-mannered and dressed in a fashion both becoming and modest.

While all of your presents were most welcome, I admit that the family chaplain was less than pleased by the subject matter of the books you sent. One of the Grafein's more naughty maids in waiting opened the volumes in question and immediately sought out Fr. Benedict. While the tomes were saved on the basis of their obvious monetary and historical value, they are locked securely in a vault, in the crypt under the altar in the family chapel.

Both myself and Sophie are grateful for your gifts, not only of material goods but also the thoughtfulness and time which so obviously accompanied their selection. Your maids, by the way, have asked Sophie (who asked me to ask you) if they might be permitted to stay the winter, in view of the first snowfall of year having arrived early this mornig. With your permission, they shall be housed as befits their rank and status. Sophie's maiden aunt has need to assistance in dressing and the like, particularly in the winter when the cold causes her such an ague-like pain in her joints. It would be a blessing if you would permit them to remain the winter.

Thank you again for your most welcome gifts and most of all for your good wishes.

By my own hand,

Karl

My Dear Young Cousin,

I acknowledge with gratitude the noble generosity of your offer: the Monte-Cristan maids will be extremely grateful to stay in a confortable warmth.

You'll discover how surprisingly skilled they are in the most inexpected domains, and how useful their presence could be, specially would some... complication of any kind emerge.

Happiness, as most precious and rare things, is fragile and can elicit dark envy. It has to be securly defended -you are too young, and currently too happy living your dream, to realize that: believe the experience of one that could be your father.

Receive, my Dear Young Cousin, the sincere expression of my paternal affection.

By my own hand,
Louys

You have our thanks for allowing the maids to remain. When I informed Sophie and she the maids, their delighted laughter could be heard nearly to Mainz!

Thank you as well for your kind advice and affection.
