Well, the ballroom has been scrubbed and polished, the cooks are busily laying in more food of one description or another, and the musicans are warmed up and ready to go (just as soon as they can determine if this royal IOU is good for anything). His Majesty de St. Maurice would like to take this time to wish all of you in this realm of imagi-nations, and your vassels of course, a Happy New Year.
Help sought and greetings too...
Any suggestions for 28/25mm figures depicting mid 18th Century Ottoman troops and also Austrian cavalry in steel helmets ?
many thanks and Happy New Year

Seven Rules for Cardboard Kingdom Stories
Ruritania is a small kingdom....
Thought this might be interesting for Imagi-Nation builders. I was re-reading "Prisoner of Zenda" and in the Introduction to the edition I was reading was a quote from a Raymond Wallace, who called such novels of small imaginary kingdoms "Cardboad Kingdom" novels, and had 7 rules for these stories:
1. The Fictitious Country - small, and preferably a Monarchy
2. The Crown (or Government) is threatened....
3. The Wicked Uncle - there must be a Villain who is an uncle, half brother, nephew, regent etc
4. The Intervening Stranger - a foreigner, typically British or American (typically from the author's home country).
5. The Remarkable Coincidence
6. The Chase
7. The Duel
To which I would add
8. The Love Interest/s
9. The Map - no story these days can be without a map.....
He notes that the form of the story typically has more to do with the culture, values and ideologies of the author, however.

Concentric uchronies
A Galatan out-of-time musing, 2nd half of Century
In her latest years of fortunate reign as Princess of Galatea and Queen of Hesperia & Arborea, Lady Elisenda Folc de Cardona had to face an unexpected internal crisis, after Empress Maria-Theresa formally requested assistance of the Galatan Confederation to an Imperial punishing expedition against the newly born Kingdom of Sicily, lead by Reich Duke von Beerstein. Summoned to a joint session for debating Her Imperial Majesty's request, a number of Confederate Parliaments rejected at first drawing any troops of their own for an allegedly agressive campaign; so that only after a long debate and heavy negotiations, a Galatan Expeditionary Brigade was finally agreed for muster.

Queen Elisenda proudly responded to the Empress in affirmative sense, but in her deep inside she understood to have this time demanded too much to the Imagi-Nation whose survival she had been devoting her entire life to. She knew her Parliaments patience had been exhausted and a change of sovereign would be soon demanded -someone young, plenty of new ideas and hopes. Her time was coming to an end, so that she silently started preparing her own succession.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!
I founded the "Emperor vs Elector" group blog over three and a half years ago. And on this Christmas Day, 2010, we now have 84* member authors *(note, now 85 authors) and have had almost 1,400 posts (and innumerable comments).
Unfortunately I never instituted a counter, so there is no knowing how many visitors we've had . . . but it must be a very large number.
I thought that you might want a look at the mad fellow (me) who started all of this . . . so click on the photo for a better look (if you want).
Anyway, please allow me to wish you all a most sincere and heartfelt "Merry Christmas"; and a "Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year" . . . and may the coming year be filled with many thrilling moments on the table top.

An idea...
I thought it might be an idea ( inspite of the vile delivery situation here in Scotland) to correspond with fellow EvE members on paper. I mentioned it before but cannot find the details or those interested . I fear it might be an excuse to use my 18th century Writing slope I got for my half century birthday this year. If any of you are of the same mind do let me know ...

The Empress asks the Marquis of Vilana to sent a brigade to Sicily to support the Reich Duke's campaign
Empress Maria Theresa has summoned the Marquis of Vilana to Schonbrunn Palace to seek military assistance from the Defiant Principality of Galatan/Catalan for her campaign in Sicily. News from the island is not good. The Reich Duke of Beerstein was repulsed with heavy casualties in his first encounter with King Joseph. Reinforcements of an infantry brigade could stabilize the situation. As the Empress is bogged down with the Turks, she is unable to sent any Austrian troops. The Marquis of Vilana may be her only hope!

Empress Maria Theresa orders Reich Duke to invest the Kingdom of Sicily
Reich Duke Wilhelm von Beerstein was order by the Empress to begin an offensive against the Kingdom of Sicily. Despite a brilliant amphibious landing, the Beerstein force was repulsed in its first encounter with the Kingdom of Sicily. King Joseph's splendid army crushed the Beerstein right flank and forced the Reich Duke to withdraw under cover of darkness. Battle accounts will be posted on both site with the best possible spin on the affair...

The Thin Blue Line ;)
News have started arriving from the battle recently held at the Galatan/Catalan town of Ponts, half-way between Balaguer city and Cardona fortress. According to my Imagi-Nation's chronology, the battle has been fought on 17th August 1713. On that day, a Two Crowns column lead by General Bracamonte consisting of 4 French, Spanish and Swiss Infantry battalions, 2 Dragoons regiments, 1 Mountain Fusiliers battalion and a field battery met on the Segre River bed the army of Marquis de Poal; who was in command of 2 Catalan Infantry battalions, 1 Dragoons regiment, 1 Sometent peasant militia and 2 batteries (heavy & light).
The 'real' battle was gamed at home last wednesday with 15mm miniatures on a reduced size board (120 x 90 cm), following Close Fire & European Order (CFEO), and it was a quite funny experience. So far, I've only had time to post a narrative chronicle of the event, protagonized by a courier and General Manuel Desvalls, commander of Cardona fortress and brother to Marquis de Poal. As soon as I know how to upload pictures from my dam...d mobile phone to my PC, a new gaming chronicle will be posted.
If curious about the battle narration, you can read a first report here: what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/2010/12/news-from-battlefield.html

Two spectacular reports of recent battles in the New World, one in the Northern Colonies, the other in the Caribbean.
Those curious about the good Baron Munchausen's improvements on the war engines depicted in the Da Vinci Code and the experimental weapons designed by that young Colonial Benjamin Franklin to use the power of the thunderflash of lightning, should subscribe to that Gazette entitled 'Gaslightrules Group' (it's free) to peruse and enjoy the two portfolios of fascinating and inspirational illustrations entitled 'Age of Reason' and 'Ben Franklin's War'.
At last, those interested in the esotericism and the supernatural would enjoy the well illustrated report of an adventure filled with weird encounters that took place in far away Pangaea.

Gallian Entourage Arrives At Frankfurt Am Main, Frankzonia, Germania
Frankfurt Am Main has been a Gallian magazine since 1755 (2005) under the control of l'Intendant, l'Comte de Bastille. Occasionally there have been festive occasions hosted by Der Hurtzhog Artur von Frankzonia. In anticipation of another, our familiar Lady Diana Pettygree and friends have arrived again - as - the winter - approaches.
Approaching The Water Gate on 2 December 1760 (2010).
Lady Diana Pettygree (blue), her particular friend Lady Cherish Masquerade (pink), Maid Katherine and last Lady Belle Silhouette (busby) pass through the gate into the cheerful bright sunshine. What a life!

A Convoy in the Balearic Sea
Port Mahon (Minorca), 18th August 1713
A scouting English xebec has reported a small convoy sailing off from Barcelona harbour, apparently heading to Majorca island. The convoy consisted of two Catalan/Galatan war brigantines (one of which flying a privateer flag) which were apparently escorting a civilian lesser ships fleet, along with a medium sized armed frigate flying Maltese flag. No aggressive manoeuvre has been detected after mutual spotting, so that the xebec has judged it appropriate to exchange an ensign salute with them and keep on her own track.

100 Club Minuetters
Following a discussion on the TMP 18th Century page, I asked Eureka Miniatures about the possibility of adding some people doing the Minuet to their 18th Century figures, this is the response:
"Thank you for your suggestion and it has been added to the web site as 18C Minuet Dancers, 100CLUBHM9"
So, if anyone wants to add dance to the Eureka String Quartet et al's music, please register your interest
(Self Interest Declaration - I have a French 7YW army, which was apparently (in)famous for officers deserying their posts to dance the Minuet, so in my baggage elements I plan to not only have the Eureka Quartet, but some dancers too)
I am assuming you all have your browsers pre-set to Eureka, but if not they are over here:

Proxy Battle Needs Players
Gentlemen,
I had missed seeing this post because a number of other posts quickly followed it, shoving it down the page . . . perhaps you missed it too.
One of our members needs someone to step up and fight a "proxy battle" for him in his on-going campaign. Click here for the background.
In a "proxy battle", you use your troops (and favorite rules) to fight out a battle for players somewhere else in the world.
So who can help Lluis?

New Events in Beimbach-Schönau.
I hope some of my fellow ImagiNationeers will be interested by my latest postings. In the last week I have made good progress with the 1740 uniform designs and as of today I have added a map to show the location of my ImagiNation within C18 Europe.
More to come this week including figure reviews and a modelling article.
Proxy battle available
Our 1713-1714 Catalonia campaign's fifth turn (what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/) has produced two battle situations, only one of which can be fought by us, so that we've thought that maybe someone of you would like to proxy game the other one.
Although each one of these battles might be considered as relatively small, they are crucial to the campaign development -so much, that they could become themselves a real turning point with respect to the campaign's historical aftermath.
We've selected for us the most odd and uneven of both scenarios. Forces are quite unbalanced in favour of the Two Crowns, but the labyrinthic terrain might be favourable to the Catalans, who will be enjoying prepared positions and might even try an ambush operation -although the scouting forces balance is favourable to the Two Crowns, too. We've given it the name of Battle of Ponts in behalf of the town lying east to the map, and is supposed to start on 17 August 1713. Respective OOBs and map can be found here: www.wargames.cat/Galatea/Ponts_17_Aug_1713.pdf.
The encounter we'd like to be fought by someone else is the one to be called Battle of El Bruc, and is supposed to happen the day next to the above. In their route from Igualada town towards Barcelona following the Lleida-Barcelona Road, the Two Crowns army must compulsory pass through a narrow pass amidst an abrupt, densely wooden landscape of steepy rocky hills, known as Coll d'El Bruc (Heather Col). There is no other path, because the road is running very close to the imposing solitary range of Montserrat, so that the Catalan army is of course calmly awaiting them on top of the col, having chosen the best positions to ensure a warm welcome to their adversaries. The battle opening is to be quite unbalanced, favourable in number of troops to the Spaniards, but during its first third the Catalans are to receive the reinforcement of 2 Infantry battalions, as well as 1 Line Cavalry regiment before end of the second third.
Early in the morning, an Imperial column was encamped alongside with the Catalans, but they've started withdrawing after the Two Crowns' army has been spotted, so that they play no role in the game, except for the fact that the Two Crowns scouting reports have lead the Spanish Commander-in-Chief to believe they are Catalans too, so that he might be really doubtful whether they are leaving the field due to internal disagreements, or if it's some kind of cunning tactics instead -maybe to perform some outflanking manoeuvre?
OOBs of al three sides and map of the area can be found here: www.wargames.cat/Galatea/El_Bruc_18_Aug_1713.pdf. Please is there anyone willing to give this scenario a try?

Introducing New Byzantium
Finally got my Imagi-Nation going.... this is the backstory to New Byzantium
A Short History
Following their defeat at the gates of Vienna in 1688, the Ottoman Empire went into a long decline and Russia and Austria nipped away at its European lands. Many of its subject provinces started to agitate for more independence as Ottoman power waned, and in quite a few there was open revolt, though the typical outcome was the Ottoman Empire came to terms with them, albeit usually leaving them virtually independent. This is the story of one of those states, the (alternative) history of New Byzantium.
In 1716, Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated the Turks at Petrovaradin. The Banat and its capital Timişoara was conquered in October 1716. The following year, after the Austrians captured Belgrade, the Turks wanted peace and in 1718 the Treaty of Passarowitz was signed. The Austrians maintained control over Belgrade, leaving the Turks with control over the south bank of the Danube river. By the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish war in 1735, Russia had managed to secure a favorable international situation by signing a few treaties with Persia in 1732–1735 (which was at war with Turkey in 1730–1736). Austria had been Russia's ally since 1726.
Emboldened by this, many of the remaining territories of what is now New Byzantium felt it was time to remove the Turkish yoke and rose in revolt. In the absence of their Sanjak (Governor) the population of Salanik (Thassaloniki) overthrew the remaining Ottoman garrison and established New Byzantium. The Turkish army, busy fighting Russia and Austria, was not in a position to put down the revolts and the revolutionaries. Russia and Austria could see the benefit of such a revolt in the Turkish rear, fed the revolutionaries with money and surreptitious military assistance. At the end of the war, the Turks attempted to restore order but were too weak and the revolutionaries, with the help of Russian forces landed from the Black Sea and Austrian Grenz troops, forced Turkey (through gritted teeth) to give them semi-independence at the Treaty of Edirne
Under Austrian and Russian influence (and to stop the factional fights that threatened to tear the new Byzantium apart - or even worse, become that most dangerous of things, a Democratic republic), a new king, or Basileios, with vague connections to the last Byzantine emperors was found and installed as Constantine X, and the Greek Orthodox church was quick to move an autocephalous Patriarch to the new capital of Thassaloniki. During the 1740 - 1748 War of Austrian Succession, New Byzantium happily took Prussian and French money to attack Austria, but spent most of this loot in building up its own army, and its attacks on Austria were slow and largely ineffective. When the French and Prussians pressed this point, Constantine X responded that he needed more materiel and training to build a "proper" army - which France duly gave, and is reflected in the French flavour of the army even today.
By 1751, Turkey felt Austria and Russia were sufficiently weakened to try and overturn the treaty of Edirne and attacked New Byzantium, and at this point it became clear that Constantine's policy in the War of Austrian Succession had been to build his own forces up while expending as little energy as possible in actually fighting Austria, and the French trained Byzantine army, supplemented with its European mercenary soldiers demobbed from the recent wars (and urgently recruited as mercenaries) gave the still largely feudal Turkish army a bloody enough nose in a series of engagements that made the Turks rethink their policy towards this irritating but relatively small new demistate. The Treaty was re-ratified, but no-one was under any illusion that this was a stable situation.
The army from the 1730's
The troops of the original revolt were primarily men serving in the Turkish army as well as a ployglot collection of mountain men, farmers and city militias. They were joined by a ragtag collection of demobbed European soldiers, idealists and ne-er do wells who formed the core of Western style cavalry and infantry units, but without Russian and Austrian help the revolt would probably still have been put down.
After being anointed, Constantine quickly realised that his best option was to build a core force of European style heavy cavalary and line infantry which the Turks had no real answer to, but use it in conjunction with the local troops who were better at the light infantry and light cavalry warfare that Turkish forces excelled in. With a vengeful Ottoman empire breathing down his neck he know there was no time to train his own troops, so like the Byzantine emperors of old he used the French and Prussian money to recruit more European soldiers as mercenaries. He resurrected the names of some of the great regiments of the Byzantine Empire to add lustre to loot.
In addition he regularised the local ex-Ottoman light troops, as he and his French advisors (None other than Marshhal de Saxe was chief advisor, and in fact it is his influence that drove the formation the armoured Scholae lancers, but that is a story for another time....) realised that Balkan light troops, properly armed and with some discipline, were the match of any (indeed most European armies were busy recruiting them as well). The desultory border fighting with Austria was more about training this new army to operate together, and capturing equipment, before the inevitable clash with Turkey.
This was accomplished in the nick of time, so that when the Turks attacked in 1750 the locals, stiffened by the mercenaries of the new Varangian Guard, Foreign Legion, Latinikon, Gianitzaroi, Turkopoloi and their own light troops were able to inflict enough early reverses on them to delay their plans. At the same time, fortuitously, many demobbed Prussians, French, Austrians and other nationalities were available after the ending of the War of Austrian Succession and more were hastily recruited as mercenaries and put into new battalions and squadrons, and it was this force that then caused the Turks sufficient damage to persuade them too sue for peace till another day.
Roll forward to today, and the early stages of the Seven Years War. New Byzantium is (as usual) carrying out a delicate balancing act of trying to get money out of warring European states and collaborating with Turkey to extract trade revenue while carefully watching them as well. Austria and Russia are fighting with France against Prussia and England, and the new Basileos, Alexius VI is busy negotiating with the British for payments to attack Austria and Russia, and letting them use his main port as a naval base in return. The newly resurrected emblem of the Byzantine Eagle is truly watching both ways (or is truly two-faced, as its opponents claim.......)
(Now all I have to do is get off my arse and start painting and photographing.....)

Austrian Cavalry On Parade
RSM Austrian Cavalry on Parade. Click pix to enlarge.
In an economy move, the Empress Marie Therese has announced the disbandment of six of Her cavalry regiments: four dragoon and two cuirassier regiments. The units are the Kolowrat Dragoons and the Wurtemberg Dragoons - the two ranks on the left; the Hesse Darmstadt and the Saxe Gotha dragoons - the two regiments in the centre; and the two cuirassier regiments (they all look the same in Austrian service) on the right.
The six inhabers are looking to sell their services to any country in Central Europa. Inquiries can be made with the Ministry of Finance in Hesse Seewald, the agent for this transaction.

It
On August 10th, 1713, the smell of blood -lots of blood- at an almost forgotten town in the South of Catalonia/Galatea caused something ominous, spooky and terrifying being awakened from its deep underground rest. Something else was to enter battle soon.

First big battle, first defeat
The first big clash between Catalan/Galatan regular troops and the invading Two Crowns Army (which has had to be solved by e-mail using Europa Universalis Combat Tables, due to a dramatic lack of lead on table :D) has come to an end. Numeric superiority and higher artillery firepower have finally prevailed upon bravery and veteranship.
Among the area peasants, it was told for some time the Ebro River waters flew red for two days... no doubt they exaggerated a bit, but the after battle carnage was frightening though.
This is the way the battle started: http://what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/2010/11/battle-of-tivissa.html
...and this is how it ended: http://what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/2010/11/defeat-at-tivissa.html
Another Two Crowns victory, almost simultaneously and not far from the 'big battle' location: http://what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/2010/11/montblanc-8-10-th-august-1713-in.html
...Harder times are still to come upon the Defiant Principality yet, I guess!

3rd Dragoon Guards Arrive at Minden

To: Major Basil Brush, deputy-commander, His Majesty's 3rd Dragoon Guards.
Station: Emden, Germania
My dear Major Brush,
In the absence of Colonel Howard, who has recently taken ill with Tradgardland Fever, you are hearby given temporary command of His Majesty's 3rd Regiment of Dragoon Guards. Your initial orders are to move the regiment on the morrow from your quarters in Emden and ride to Minden, to reinforce Lord Granby's garrsion in the city of the same. You are to be joined by a squadron of the 1st Dragoon Guards, under the command of Captain Cook. Since your route of travel is well behind the Allied army's lines, it is unlikely that you will encounter any hostile forces. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you post an a picket of one troop ahead of your regiment as a precaution, should any Gallian light cavalry be found patrolling behind the Allied lines.

On a hilltop outside Frankfurt Am Main Lieutenant Général Armentieres (left) and l'Intendat l'Comte de Bastille are about to enjoy luncheon.
Armentieres: "The Frankzonians know how to prepare a heavy luncheon, do they not?"
Bastille: "Oui. That Hurtshog! His people try very hard."
Armentieres: "Are you softening about the Frankzonians?"
Bastille: "After three years at this post, though combustible to be sure, with confusions a plenty, we are still here. Plus, the battle in which you assisted Der Hurtshog on 22 June this year reduced the turbulence in my thoughts - almost entirely."
Armentieres: "I found him a like-able German. It would be good to see him again."
Bastille: "Oui. Where is he these days?"

An upset in the siege of Dolfstein
Your Highnesses of the States General
I wish to report a minor irritation during the siege of Dolfstein in Frankenberg. Although the campaign goes well a recent raid by the enemy has somewhat disrupted us. A supply convoy escorted by our Danish contingent was surprised and overwhelmed by a superior force of the enemy. This act was somewhat knavish, and this is reinforced by the enemy's use of a horde of barbaric Hussars to lead the attack.
Despite the valiant efforts of our troops the local commanders, Graf von Altefish, General van Klogg and General von Hinder-Entz, the supply train was captured and carried off in its entirety. Amongst the wagons was the paychest for the English troops. I have had the other paychests divided equally in order to make sure that all of our men have some sustenance, but the grumblings have not aided morale during this drawn out siege. I have confidence that Dolfstein will soon fall, however, and this will be a much needed fillip to us all.
Until then, Highnesses, I am your most loyal and obedient servant,
Field Marshal of the Allied Forces operating in Frankenberg,
Graf W. von Pritzwalk
P.S. Another paychest would be appreciated...

A diplomacy battle, imminent
Yesterday morning (ehem... that is, on 6th August 1713...), a Spanish/Hispannic war galley carried in Monte-Cristo the renowned Philip V's legate Marquis de Ordoño, with the expectable mission to counter the diplomatic efforts of the Catalan/Galatan legacy currently seeking supports to their agonic struggle against the Two Crowns. As a matter of fact, Don García Manuel de Cotes y Ormaza, Marquis of Ordoño and General Comissary of the Croisade (sic) is one of the most renowned legates in service of Philip V, well-known for his stubborn dealing positions during the Utrecht Treaty deliberations.
Some concern has spread in the offices of the Monte-Cristan Bureau de la Sûreté Nationale when, as a result of their discreet inquiries, it has been known the galley also carried a whole company of heavily armed Royal Walloon Guards; no one doubts the Hispannic expedition would never be fool enough to dare taking any war action inside Monte-Cristan soil, but the purpose why so many elite soldiers are accompanying the Marquis de Ordoño remains nevertheless as an intriguing mystery. Just for caution, Sous-lieutenante Claire Baizanville has discretely reinforced the security devices around the Catalan/Galatan Legate, Marquis of Vilana.
Please read the chronicle, if interested, at The Galley (and please accept my apologies for my so rude English). No necessary to assert any kind of diplomatic intervention would be warmly welcome :S

Listing the Galatan Army
Hi all,
I've just completed a fully illustrated listing on the Cavalry and Infantry units of the Late WSS Catalan/Galatan Army. This includes not only coloured templates picked up from the huge collection at "Not By Appointment", but also photos of the 15mm regiments I'm currently building too.
You can take a glance, if desired, at: http://what-if-catalonia.blogspot.com/p/army-of-galatea.html.
Dragoons, Mountain Fusiliers, Artillery and Militia to follow shortly, hopefully.

Really too much lead is possible
Well, in our customary efforts to make ends meet, we have managed a bit of an overlap.
Somehow in an excess of enthusiasm, I acquired about 250 unpainted Front Rank SYW British Infantry surplus to requirements (even my rather extravagant requirements). Anyone who might be interested in picking them up for $1.20 a figure plus P&P from Arkansas, please drop me an email at the.firefall@att.net for more details.
