A study of the Morean Army, by Antonis Vlachernos

History of the Modern Morean Army 1675-1739, by Antonis Vlachernos

Andronicus II in Western Dress

Up to the 1675 reforms of Andronicus II the army of the principality of Morea was made up of some permanent elements, and than semi-feudal forces and foreign mercenaries. The permanent elements or the Oikiakon corps was made up of the Janissary guard orta created in 1517, a regiment of Hungarian cavalry created in the 1550s, and the two permanent mercenary regiments of pike and shot, the Vaggaron and Latinikon both created in 1599. The rest of the army was made up of ad-hoc formations of Albanian and Greek warbands, specializing in skirmishing, light Sipahi and Pronoia cavalry, and regiments of Italian or Balkan mercenaries rented for a campaign period. The artillery arm was also rudimentary.

Andronicus II reformed the army in 1675. He expanded the permanent force with the creation of 5, one battalion, territorial regiments raised by conscription of 1 out of 50 men and volunteers, and 1 naval marine’s regiment of 2 battalions. These where trained to fight in the western manner. The regiments where raised from specific areas of the principality and at peace time where posted there. The regiments where The Old Regiment raised out of Mystra itself, the Maniaton raised from the Greeks of Mani and Monevasia, the Arkadon raised from the Greeks and Slavs of Arkadia and Tripoli, the Albanikon raised from the Albanians of the area around Patra, and the Nafplioton raised from Nafplio and Argolida. The marine regiment, Pezonauton was primarily raised from the Ionian dominions of the Prince. The Prince, also did away with the adhoc formations of Sipahis and Pronoia clavary, and created a regiment of Anatolian Sipahis raised from his Muslim subjects , and one of Greek lancers. He also raised two regiments of dragoons from German and Italian immigrants.

Princess Maria Louisa

This army co-existed with the ad-hoc Greek and Albanian war-bands, up to the great 1680-1686 rebellion. Maria-Louisa smashed the ad-hoc element and destroyed it, forcing most war-bands to enter permanent service as armatoli militia paid and belonging to the Prince. At that time, she changed the Hungarian Guard Cavalry regiment to a Cuirassier regiment. She also expanded the Janissary Orta and dragoon regiments. At about that time the uniforms and tactics of the army emulated those of France, except for the Anatolian and Hungarian regiments, and the armatoli that kept an exotic dress.

Prince Michael II

The next great change came during the reigns of Michael II and Theofilia. Michael III changed the coat colors of his infantry from Bourbon white to the current yellow-brown. He also added a new territorial regiment, raised in Apulia, the Duca di Apulia. Furthermore he raised a Huguenot, the La Rochelle regiment, from protestant refugees from France and Hungary and an Irish regiment, Keltikon, from Irish immigrants. Finally he formed a robust artillery train and raised the Pezonauton regiment to 3 battalions. At that era, The Hungarian cavalry regiment and the Nafplioton infantry regiments took black as their color in mourning of the death of Michaels son, Basil, who had died leading these units at the Battle of Bari on 23rd April 1709.

During Theofilias early reign, Carl XII during his 3 year sojourn in the principality made major changes to the uniform and tactics of the army. First he divided the infantry into Territorial and Foreign elements. He introduced the Swedish uniform to the non-catholic foreign regiments (Vaggaron, La Rochelle) and a French uniform pattern to the catholic (Duca di Apulia, Keltikon) and a Russian patterned one to the orthodox regiments (Territorial). Theofilia decided to give a Swedish uniform also to the Latinikon regiment as a sing of her affection for Carl. Also the Vaggaron regiment took the blue and yellow coat colors of Sweden. Carl also created two squadrons of hussars for the Hungarian cavalry, and introduced Swedish dress for the Dragoons. Theofilia resisted changes to the colors of the uniforms, which remained the same as in Maria-Louisa’s army. Carl also introduced Swedish tactics to the army.

Theofilia later raised three more territorial regiments in 1718, the Ellinikon, raised from Greeks of Agean holdings, the Attikon raised from Greeks and Vlachs of Attika, and the Halkidaion, raised from Euboea. In preparation for the War of Polish Succession she also took into permanent service a Swiss Regiment, the Elbeton. She also had the territorial regiments retrained to fire-power tactics, while keeping Swedish tactics for the foreign regiments. Currently the Principality is fielding two field armies. One in Apulia, and the other in Attica.

Recruitment:

The soldiers of the principality are recruited primarily by a volunteer system supported by conscription. Volunteers take up the colors for up to 10 years, with the ability to rise to the rank of captain. Conscripts are brought in to fill up battalions and serve for a maximum of 5 years. They are also taught an art or craft, as well as reading and writing as compensation for their conscription. Those conscripts, who after finishing their tour of duty, wish to remain, can do so for another ten years. Same goes for volunteers.

Veterans of war and invalids receive a small pension, as well as if they want to, a plot of land or fishing boat.

Soldiers of the Territorial regiments must be Orthodox or Catholic (Unites), and come form the home area of the regiment.

Soldiers of the Foreign regiments must be Protestant for the Vaggaron and La Rochelle, and Catholic for the Duca di Apulia, Keltikon, and Latinikon. The Swiss regiment’s composition is left to the contracting Cantons.

The only special cases are the Janissary orta, Sipahi lancers, and the Hungarian Calvary units of the Princely Guard. The Janissary orta is a hereditary unit raised from the Egyptian expatriates of Morea. All members must either be Bektashi Muslims or become so on entrance. Janissaries serve for 30 years. The Sipahi lancers are raised from the Muslim population of the principality and serve for 10 years. This is the only service required of them. Brave or smart Sipahis might be inducted in the Jannisay Orta, if they wish so. The Hungarian Calvary is raised by Hungarian expatriates, to which later where added Poles. Troopers serve for 20 years as well.

All soldiers take a sacred oath to obey the Prince or Princess of Morea. They also spill wine on the ground as a sing of consummating their oath. This older, pagan ritual is used to signify the fact that their oath is not to their gods but to the Prince or Princess.

The tactical doctrine of the principality relies on the three regiment brigade. A foreign regiment is brigaded with two territorial regiments. They all then march to firing range with the enemy. All three fire two volleys. Then the Foreign regiment charges forward, while the two territorial regiments continue firing. If it breaks the enemy the foreign regiment holds its ground and covers the advance of the territorial regiment. If it fails, it falls back under cover of the territorial regiment’s fire. The territorial regiments will charge only to support the foreign regiment if it is caught in a melee, attacking earthworks, or in danger of annihilation. This tactical doctrine has lead to a higher number of Grenadiers in the foreign regiments (at least 1/5th of the men) than in the territorial regiments (1/10th of the men). The territorial regiments fire by platoon. The Foreign regiments by volley.

Calvary tends to attack using cold steel, with hussars and lancers used also for harassing and scouting.

To follow is a unit by unit look at the army.

Fit Royal

The Prinz’s planned trip to Twinj for the Feast of the Conception of St. Anne had proved to be a most taxing exercise for Detlev Eberhardt. While masterfully fulfilling his duties as head of Cavenderian commerce Detlev had been hounded night and day by Monsieur Roux, the Prinz’s social secretary, seeking approval of each and every detail of the royal sojourn. Detlev could respect M. Roux’s maniacal attention to detail, however a fortnight of discussing minutiae such as which seasonal flowers should be used to perfume the royal bed, had worn Detlev’s nerves to the point that he would visibly wince upon hearing M. Roux’s voice.

“Monsieur Eberhardt, I’ve been searching for Vous!” the deep nasally voice was unmistakable and caused Detlev to grind his teeth unexpectedly. Detlev relaxed his shoulders and hurriedly spoke, “Monsieur Roux, I was just preparing to depart for a meeting with the royal cartographer concerning an expedition to map the coastline of Avar, and I apologize but I must be going.” “But Monsieur we must discuss his majesty’s baggage train’s security detail..” M. Roux baritone was drowned out by a thunderous crash and a shrill scream. “What was that?” asked M. Roux to a quickly shrinking view of Detlev’s broad back. Detlev bound up the stairs two at a time and upon reaching the second floor was greeted by an empty hallway. “Where are the servants?” he thought, Detlev advanced down the hall retrieving a small knife he kept tucked in his belt. As Detlev rounded the corner to the Prinz’s private wing he felt some relief as he spied the household guard on either side of the entrance to the Prinz’s offices.

The guards looked at him as he advanced, they had an almost sheepish look, like a child who had been caught with a thimble full of rum. Another crash, less spectacular than the first reached his ears, “What is this disturbance?” Detlev shouted as he entered the Prinz’s study. The room was strewn with papers, the tapestries stained with ink and a bureau lie on its side. Detlev did not immediately see the Prinz. Detlev lowered his voice and spoke, “Does his lordship require any assistance?”
A hushed voice spoke from behind the bureau, “The world has turned against us, armies mass in Stagonia,” the Prinz paused, his voice grew louder, “what in the name of all that is holy could that women be thinking? How could she reward that deyvil, her gestures are blasphemy, a women will pour sweet words into ones ears while burying a knife in ones back!!” More papers flew into the air and Detlev could make out the Prinz’s legs kicking above the overturned bureau. “Ignorance is bliss” thought Detlev. The Prinz’s voice was filled with anger and despair, “we must send word to the imperial court of this treachery!! And to our cousin, send for Graf von Siltz!!

Detlev noticed he had been grinding his teeth again, unclenching he spoke, “Does your majesty refer to reports of the Morean mission to Bizerrca?” “Mission, it is a pact with the Deyvil, himself, that women should be supporting fellow Christians not prostrating at the feet of the pagan as a concubine!!”, the Prinz thrashed and threw a spittoon at the eastern wall. “Her majesty is not involved in our conflict and only seeks to procure the villain Ducas.” Detlev deliberately lingered on the word majesty. “Villain!!! The man should be canonized for his privateering efforts, WE should employ him to fight the Bizerrcans!” Detlev had never seen the Prinz this passionate, making it all the more sad that this vitriol was wasted on what in his mind was clearly not an affront to Cavenderia. “My Prinz if the Princess means to join in unholy alliance with the Dey, why would should wish for her grandson to visit our court?” Prinz Geoffrey loosened his grip on the copy of Barius’ Diatribes which was about to become air borne. The Prinz’s brow softened, “we have not heard of such a visit?” “News of the Princess’ desire for her grandson to visit several royal courts including your majesty’s arrived only this morning.”
The Prinz stared for a moment then extended his hand to be helped up from the floor. “Hmmm, well, that IS something, does the young man like horses?”

Open for business

Gentlemen, having been invited to this august body by His Excellency the Elector of Saxe-Bearstein, I wish to take the opportunity to remind you that the well-disciplined, highly trained and well armed units of the Republic of Neues Sudland are at your service, should you desire to increase number of troops under your command. Regiments of infantry and cavalry may be hired for service to defend yourselves against the depredations of rapacious neighbours, with the certain knowledge that the agreement will not be divulged to any other party without your consent. Terms of service range from two years to five, the time including the passage from the Republic to the capital of the hiring nation.

Unfortunately we may offer no artillerists nor sappers, due to the growing tensions between the Republic and the parvenu Holy Mormoan Kingdom of New Wales, a state founded on the theft of land rightly belonging to the Republic.

I salute you.

Padraig O'Gabhain
Minister for War and Ambassador at Large.

Morean Mission to the Dey of Bizercaa

From the Gazzete di Taranto
Her Orthodox and Serene Excellency Princess Theofilia has dispatched the 20 gun Sloop Maria Louisa with his sebasmiotis Archbishop Makarios
and his lordship La Chevalier De'Corfu
to bring back Dragounarios Spyridon Ducas

to stand trial for treason and embezelment of State funds. We would like to remind our readers that the Dragounarios had been sent to Malta to precure a new frigate for the Morean fleet. But supposedly his ship was waylaid by pirates. For the last year his whereabouts where unkown, until a ragged and sick Jannisary of the Guard Orta, one of the men send to escort Ducas, arrived in Mystra with a tale of high treason!

Ducas seems to had been the member of a criminal group with ties to pirates troughout the mediterreanean. He intended to use the Princess money to set himself up as a pirate lord. Now it seems that he was unluccky and was captured in a sharp action by a xebec of the Dey.

Her OSE the Princess expresses her gratitude to the Dey, and sends as a gift a golden sword.

Other news from the Palace concern invitations and awards offered to her OSE by foreing leaders.

Her OSE graciously accepts the felicitations of her fellow rulers and promises to keep and open mind concerining the Mediterranean. Furthermore she has restated her adherence to the freedom of the seas. As long as all do so, the Princess shall be a friend of peace, and keep the dogs of Ares leashed.

Furthermoe her OSE has accepted an invitation for her grandson Basil, King of Romans, to visit the Preciplaity of MonteChristo in his Grand Tour. It is rumored that when Senator remarked on the "weird" customs of MonteChristo her OSE retorted that it will be good fora future King of territories as diverse as those of Morea to sample all the world has to offer in cultures and customs. It should be reminded to our readers that her Excellency was know in her youth for her wild ways.
Scene from a court party of her IM Anna of Russia. Theofilia is the lady in the purple dress.

The Royal Prince, will also visit Grand Duke Karl of Hetzenberg, Reich Duke Wilhelm of the Reich Duchy of Beerstein, the Grand Duchess of Grolstein and Prinz Geoffrey Cavaderia. He will also visit Turin, Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Saint Petersburg. Preparations will start by the end of the month.

A New King, and A New Challange,..

It is the 1st day of February, 1746, and the new King of the Holy Mormoan Kingdom of New Wales has only been on the Throne for only two and a half months. Economically and politically the situation appears stable. The only threats to the Kingdom appear to come from France, (and maybe from the Republic Of Neue Sudland).
"Note to self,.." thinks the new King, as he strolls through the Palace Gardens; "I must send an emissary to The Republic; and maybe a gift or two. I must find out what their intentions are."
King Phillip turns to General Zillmann, the Minister for War: "I say General, it's rather hot today, don't you think"?
"Ja Mien King, but not as hot as the lead at Port Phillip"!
"Ah yes, Port Phillip! You were the RSM of the 7th Foot at the time I believe".
The General grew another 6 inches, (adding to his already considerable height).
"Ja mien King, I was 37, and in the midst of the best years of my life".
The General was one of only a handful of high ranking officers that had risen from the ranks.
"I hope your best years are still ahead of you. I feel they will be required,...".
Both men headed back to the palace.
TO BE CONTINUED!

The Burden of Command

Supreme Commanding General of the Armee of the Kongreich der Bleiherzen, Hergärd Reinhold von Konigswald, surveys the defenses of the Bleiherzen capitol of Schwibus at dawn.... he contemplates the Duchess of Grolstein's next move...she certainly grows stronger and perhaps is gaining allies from the south (new rumors of a certain Princess Theofilia....and certainly the Duchess and she have the ear of the Turks. The fate of Bleiherzen seems in the General's hands...oh! the burden...There is much to think about...and Frederick still needs his horseflesh....yes always, ... the insatiable demand for horseflesh...

Worries in Mystra

Princess Theofilia in Coronation Robes 1710
From the Gazzete di Taranto
Her Orthodox and Serene Excellency, Princess Theofilia of Morea and Achaea, Duchess of Apulia and Countess Palatine of Cephalonia and Zande , had sent ambassadors to the Sublime Porte and Venice to consult regrading the situation brewing in Dalmatia between the Hapsburg Empire and the Dey of Bizercca. Furthermore she has orded the 74 gun ship of the line ,Andronicus and the 24 gun frigate Naumaxos to set sail for Bari. They also carry orders for the reffiting of the 56 gun Apulia. Furthermore the Latinikon and Nafplioton regiments are to be transported to Apulia to reinforce the Duca di Apulia regiment and the two battalions of the Pezonauton regiments already there.

At the same time, rumors circulate that the Princess wishes for her 16year grandson Basil, King of Romans and Count of Bari,to go on a grand tour of European and Colonial courts. Requests for invitations have been sent abroad.

Regt Andlau Marches off to War

Regiment Andlau of the Imperium Army marches off to the rendezvous point near Lobositz.

Marshal von Browne is concentrating his scattered forces near the town of Lobositz, in northern Bohemia to fend off a reported Germanian invasion of Bohemia. The Marshall was much pleased to discover that reinforcements were heading his way. First and foremost of these is the newly created Andlau Regiment (Minden Miniatures) as well as 2 squadrons of the Esterhazy Hussars and 1 squadron of the DeVille Cuirassiers (as previously reported on another blog).

With these reinforcements, von Brown expects to field an army of 12 line battalions of infantry, including two converged grenadier battalions, plus one battalion of converged Croats. The cavalry component will include 9 squadrons of cuirassiers, 4 squadrons of dragoons, 3 squadrons of elite horse grenadiers, and 4 squadrons of hussars. In addition, 9 squadrons of Saxon light dragoons may also be available at Lobositz.

Wittenberg - Ambassador departs for Saxe-Bearstein

Count Hermann of Munster gives Count Wilhelm Hatzof (in the grey) his final instructions before he departs as ambassador to Saxe-Bearstein. He will be accompanied by Major-General Heinrich von Bose (form the Duchy of Fenwick) who will act as military attache. The purpose of the visit is to discuss and coordinate a response to the activities of Stagonia.
